Next Gen Gaming Consoles With Sony, Nintendo & Xbox
Torn between getting a custom gaming PC setup or a gaming console dedicated to next gen games and entertainment?
This guide is to give you a better understanding on what are some of the considerations to help you decide on the best console that suits your gaming style. For custom gaming PCs, check out MSI X Dreamcore’s Loong Nia (Dragon Princess) collab that was recently launched at The Tech Show 2025!
1. Sony PS5 Slim / PS5 Digital / PS5 Pro
No introduction is needed for one of the most iconic console families since the original PlayStation launched in 1994. With exclusive titles like Ghost of Yotei, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarök, The Last of Us Part II, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and many more, the PS5 remains an easy pick for gamers who want the biggest titles the moment they drop.
But the real question is: which PS5 should you choose? The PS5 Slim (Disc Edition), PS5 Digital, or the PS5 Pro?
As an avid gamer myself, I picked the PS5 Slim (Disc Edition). I had skipped the PS4 generation, and many PS4 titles still hold up incredibly well even in 2025/26 like Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part I. (Yes, there’s a PS5 remake, and while it looks better, it’s essentially the same game.) Physical copies of these titles also go for a fraction of their original price.
So imagine my surprise when I found out both games are now available on the PlayStation Plus catalogue, where you can play hundreds of titles for just SGD $169.90 a year.
If I could turn back time, I’d probably go for the PS5 Digital instead.
For gamers eyeing the PS5 Pro, make sure your gaming monitor or TV can actually support its full capabilities especially its 8K output and that you’ve got strong Wi-Fi for seamless gameplay before committing to the upgrade.
Retail Price:
PS5 Slim: S$799.00
PS5 Digital: S$669.00
PS5 Pro: S$1,069.00
2. Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo has always marched to the beat of its own drum, and the Switch 2 continues that legacy. It’s not trying to compete on raw processing power or the highest resolutions. They are about fun, creativity, and games that just make you smile.
With Nintendo titles like The Legend of Zelda, Mario Kart, Super Mario Bros., Pokémon, and more on the way for the next generation, this is the console you pick when you want unforgettable gameplay.
The Switch 2 improves on everything fans loved about the original: better performance, smoother visuals, improved battery life, and a more premium handheld experience. Whether you’re commuting, lounging on the sofa, or gaming with friends, it’s built for flexibility. If you enjoy multiplayer, party games, or portable gaming, the Switch 2 is an easy recommendation and honestly, nothing else comes close in this category.
However if you already owned the first Switch, should you still go for the upgrade? Our advice is to wait for more Switch 2 exclusive titles to be released before making a decision.

3. Xbox Series X/S
If you’re the kind of gamer who values performance, freedom of choice, and huge value, the Xbox Series X and S deserve a serious look. Xbox may not have as many exclusives as PlayStation, but what it does have is Game Pass — arguably the best subscription service in gaming. For a single monthly fee, you get access to hundreds of games, day-one releases, and a rotating library that keeps things fresh all year round.
Between the two models, the question becomes: do you need raw power or simple convenience?
The Series X is the powerhouse — 4K gaming, fast load times, and enough storage to keep your favourites installed. The Series S, on the other hand, is perfect if you’re a casual gamer, don’t need discs, or just want something affordable that still plays next-gen titles smoothly. Personally, I love how compact the Series S is — it fits anywhere, travels easily, and still delivers a great experience.
If value is your top priority, Xbox is the one to beat.
Retail Price:
Xbox Series X: S$799.00
Xbox Series S: S$469.90
4. ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X
If you’re a PC gamer on the move, the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X might feel like discovering a cheat code. It’s a full-fledged Windows gaming handheld, meaning you can play Steam, Game Pass, Epic Games Store and practically your entire PC library anywhere you go. The performance is surprisingly strong for its size, and the screen looks fantastic for portable AAA gaming.
The only thing to think about is battery life — like most powerful handheld PCs, it drains quickly when playing heavy titles. But if you want a device that lets you pause Elden Ring, unplug it, hop on a train, and continue your adventure, the Ally delivers exactly that. It’s freedom for PC gamers who don’t want to be stuck at a desk.
