MacBooks vs iPad: Which Device Should You Choose?

Apple is well known for its annual iPhone releases, but this year, the spotlight shifted from phones to laptops. With the introduction of the new MacBook Neo, Apple’s expansion of their product lineup has brought up a question: do you need the most powerful gadget, or just the right one? Alongside established favourites like the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, the Neo stands out as the
Gen Z of the group: bold and full of life.

At the same time, the surge in popularity of iPads – more powerful and versatile than ever – continues to blur the line between tablets and laptops. With such a wide range of products in the market, it is no longer as straightforward to choose the right gadget. From their unique features to their limitations, here is the ultimate guide to finding the best Apple gadget for your next chapter!

  • Limited storage options: Available only in 256GB and 512GB configurations, additional iCloud storage may need to be purchased for some users if they want to share files efficiently with other Apple products

iPad Air/Pro

With its versatility, iPads have become an essential gadget for everyday life. By pairing an iPad with accessories like an Apple Pencil and wireless keyboard, you can easily transform an iPad into a digital notebook or a laptop. Beyond productivity, iPads also support creative applications for artists to bring their designs to life. As such, iPads appeal to a wide range of users, allowing assignments and creative work to be completed using a single device. However, despite its evolution, whether an iPad can be used in lieu (/replacement) of a laptop remains debatable.

Key Features:

  • Touch-based Interface: Offers an intuitive user experience best for direct interaction
  • Portable Design: Weighing less than 500 grams, iPads are thin and lightweight, making it easy to bring along
  • Compatibility with Accessories: iPads can be paired with external accessories to enhance its functionality
  • Performance Capability: Powered by the M4/5 Chip, iPads are capable of handling simple tasks like digital illustrations and video editing

Limitations:

  • Additional Costs for Better Functionality: Purchasing accessories to transform an iPad can easily increase the overall price, making it comparable or even more expensive than a MacBook Neo
  • Limited Storage Capacity: iPads do not support expandable storage, becoming restrictive for users handling large files
  • Multitasking Restraints: Although iPads support features like split-screens, they are less efficient and seamless than MacBooks, reducing productivity
  • Poorer Web Experience: Some websites may not function as fully as they do on laptops, displaying mobile versions on iPads that lack certain features

Ultimately, choosing between a MacBook and iPad depends on your priorities and needs. From the portability of an iPad to the advanced features of the MacBook Pro, each product offers its own strengths and limitations.

As an aspiring university student, the iPad Air intrigues me the most, due to its touch-based interface and compatibility with accessories. As my major won’t require intensive tasks like coding, my priorities of taking lecture notes and creating simple designs can be easily met with the iPad Air, making my school days seamless and fuss free.

That said, an iPad alone doesn’t fully replace the experience of a laptop. If I had the chance to step into Apple’s shoes for a day, I’d envision a hybrid—an “iPad x MacBook Neo”—designed as a laptop with touch screen capabilities as the perfect student device that checks every box.

So, whether you’re a professional graphic designer or a first-time Apple user, Apple’s wide range of products is guaranteed to support you in your journey! If you want to learn more about laptops and tablets from Apple and other renowned brands, come down to CEE 2026 from
